Dementia/Neurocognitive Disorder Treatment

Dementia, now termed, Neurocognitive Disorder (NCD), is the death and or/disability of brain cells which store information in the brain and cause the progressive loss of multiple intellectual abilities. Neurocognitive disorders can affect memory, attention, learning, language, perception, and social cognition. Neurocognitive disorders go beyond the normal issues of aging, and describe a level of cognitive decline that requires specific strategies and accommodations to help an individual maintain independence and perform activities of daily living. To be diagnosed with NCD, there must be changes that impact cognitive functioning and these changes are often identified by close relatives, caregivers, friends, colleagues, or clinicians. Neurocognitive disorders are now differentiated by causes including Alzheimer's disease, vascular disease, frontotemporal degeneration, Lewy Body disease, and other contributing factors. Depending on the cause, most symptoms are not reversible and are progressive, which means the symptoms worsen over time. Cognitive testing may be completed by a practitioner to assist with accurate diagnosis.
