Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Treatment

Formerly believed to only affect children who would eventually “grow out of” the illness, we now know that attentional deficit disorders can affect some individuals throughout the lifespan. ADHD, whether inattentive, hyperactive, or impulsive, can impair functioning in various environments, including home, work, and school. ADHD can interrupt lives, and can result in self-doubt, anxiety and depression. When properly identified and treated, quality of life often improves. Medication is usually a core component in treating attention deficit disorders, and psychotherapy can also be beneficial in helping clients learn to cope and adapt.

There is no single cause of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, but we now believe there are many possible causes that may increase the likelihood that symptoms will arise, including genetics and other factors such as low birth weight, smoking during pregnancy, etc.

Some symptoms of ADHD include being emotionally over-reactive, fidgeting, squirming, not being able to sit still, restlessness, interrupting others, being easily distracted, having problems with focusing, daydreaming, and being forgetful.
